There are Always There

They are Always There

She is always so quiet.
Why doesn’t she talk?
The shadows are going to catch her
if she lingers too long.
You
can already see their prying fingers
lapping at her naked ankles,
like newborn leeches thirsting for
the taste of fresh blood.
Would
she mind if we asked, what haunts
her dreams at night, who hides behind
that mask of snow, so flawless, so pure
and so cold?
Scream,
laugh, play, that’s really all
it takes to splinter their dominance,
to charm the ink devils
into whimpering cowards.
If
she is so vulnerable,
their unshapely forms are bound to
pounce, slinking towards her stoic
inert being, creeping, ever closer.
You
and I both know she’s probably faking,
wasted silence scalding her flushed rose lips,
yearning for attention and pity.
How desperate can you be?
Could
she not just resist against
their kicks, their sneers, their jabs?
She never strikes back, never
raises a finger on that delicate, paper palm.

Hear
the news yesterday,
about the new girl in the office?
She didn’t have to be so distant, so curt,
when we only wanted to trade harmless gossip.

The
slate skirts she wears don’t flatter
her standard waist at all, plunging south,
a highway straight to her heels,
shrouding her ankles in a somber mist.
Demons,
and black licorice, mimicking the color
of her gleaming hair stretched taught,
bound into a constricting midnight chignon
any flyaway strands tucked neatly in twine.
Too
gloomy, too bleak, too much gray to
to stain the white in my day.
So, why doesn’t she talk more?
She has always been quiet.

  1. I really love the way you chose to format this. Your writing is not only brimming with sensory detail, but the way you describe your characters makes them seem incredibly relatable. This was excellent! <3

  2. The format of your poem is so cool, and it really emphasizes the emotion you are trying to convey. Your sensory detail is wonderful and complex, it was fun imagining the characters you describe so vividly. Nice job! :)

  3. The things i would give if i could write like this. So profound as well as beautiful. Not only the format which is both clever and really meaningful, but the way the poem is written. The way the words flow as you read them. I cant exactly put my finger on it, but this is just really really good to read.
